Once immortal, the elves lived in relative peace, with little regard for the outside world. After the tragedy of the Nightspire at Nyra Turis, the elves were forced to join forces with the other races for their own survival.

The Ancient Elves

The elves are the oldest living race on Lumios. The ancient elves were once immortal beings.  Protected by the World Tree, Lily’anthes, they lived with little worry, focusing their lives on arts, music, and magical studies. Due to their immortality, the elven population remained small, seeing little need to propagate.

The Rise of Humans

As humans rose to power, some of the elves joined the Old Empire, seeking to forge a peaceful bond with the newer, pragmatic race. In time, the elves began teaching humankind the ways of magic to strengthen their relationship. Their generosity, however, became their downfall. The ambitious humans eventually became jealous of the masterful and magically-inclined elves. 

The Burning Tree

As time wore on, a subset of human mages from Orzo Academy found that the elves had kept some of their magical knowledge a secret, namely dark magic. They decided to research this forbidden magic on their own. Unaware of the dangers, these mages attempted to open a portal to another dimension at the Nightspire in Nyra Turis. The results were disastrous. During the struggle to push back the otherworldly forces, the World Tree Lily’anthes was permanently damaged and now burns for eternity. Weakened by the fires, the world tree could no longer sustain the elven people, and their immortality was lost forever. 

A New Life for the Elves

Spurred on by the need for their race to survive, the elven populace has grown since the disaster at the Nightspire. Searching for ways to heal the world tree, the elves spread out from their secluded home. In the centuries since, they have adapted to their new environments and evolved into several offshoot races.
