Echoes of Aincrad - Demo Guide
Delve into Danger
Your adventure begins at the start of an unexplored dungeon. The rest of your team is already deeper inside. You rush to join them, but as you do… disaster strikes. Can you escape a monster-infested maze alone?
The demo for Echoes of Aincrad drops you right into the beta release of a brand new online fantasy VRMMORPG game named Sword Art Online. Launch day isn't far away, but no one is aware that when the full game finally drops… survival is not guaranteed.
This guide will help you through your first moments in the Echoes of Aincrad Demo. We'll explore the core concepts and gameplay systems, leaving plenty of room for your own discoveries when you start to play.
Welcome to your new digital life.
Weapons Are Your Class
Spellcasters and magical powers don't exist in the world of Aincrad. You'll have to forge your destiny with the weapons you wield.
The more you use a type of weapon to defeat enemies, the more Weapon Exp you'll earn and the more technics, called Sword Skills, that you can unlock. Try them all, then pick your favorites. You can have up to 3 Sword Skills equipped at a time.
Here's a brief description of the six types of arms you can carry into battle. Keep in mind that you can only change weapons between quests when you're in the Town of Beginnings.

Sword and Shield
A balanced pair with both offensive and defensive options. Use them together, or unequip the shield for faster, riskier moves. This is your tutorial starting weapon, but you can craft, drop, or purchase other weapons as you play.
Two-Handed Axe
A slower but more aggressive option that could leave you open to attack if mistimed. Focuses on area-of-effect attacks and cannot be paired with a shield.
Dagger
A light, quick weapon that hits often but has a shorter range and lower average damage. Can be used at range by throwing blades. Daggers cannot be paired with a shield.
Rapier
A graceful lighter sword with long reach and a flowing style that chains attacks together or counters enemies with ease. Can be used with a shield.
Two-Handed Sword
A heavy hitter that allows you to charge up your attacks for greater damage. Two-handed swords cannot be used with a shield, and your dodge maneuver becomes a roll when you equip it.
Mace
Another weapon that can be paired with a shield. Maces excel at breaking through enemy defenses to stagger or knock them down.
Forged in Fire
Cities and villages usually have a Smithy who can help you improve your weapon and combine weapon EX-Mods. You'll find one in the Town of Beginnings after you've reserved your room at the Inn.
EX-Mods are abilities that can customize a weapon with advantages like reduced Stamina cost or improved normal Attack damage. You can combine weapons of the same type to pool up to four EX-Mods on a single weapon. This allows you to customize your build to support your favorite blade, axe, or mace.
You can also level up your weapon's overall parameters at the Smithy by spending specific materials or turning other weapons into materials. This type of weapon level is distinct from your Weapon Proficiency and can do things like increase your weapon's base damage.
Your local Smithy can also help you craft new weapons and armor using recipes you'll find as you explore, complete quests and increase your Cardinal Rank.
Improve Yourself
Boosting Your Stats
In addition to your weapon skills, you can also improve your base stats by applying Growth Points to your character while resting at your room in the Inn. Your stats can increase the amount of damage your weapon skills do, depending on the weapon and skill in question. These four damage stats are Strength, Dexterity, Agility, and Intelligence.
You can also increase your Vitality, Endurance and Mind for more Health Points, Stamina Points, and the overall effectiveness of SP abilities.
You'll receive Growth Points when you increase your character's level by defeating monsters.

Cardinal Rank
Your Cardinal Rank is an indication of your character's overall proficiency. Cardinal Ranks don't only affect your character. Cardinal Ranks also determine which items you can purchase from merchants or forge at the Smithy.
Oh, and the monsters in the world around you will respond to your Cardinal Rank by increasing their difficulty to a certain degree.
Make sure you spend your Growth Points and improve your weapons at the Blacksmith each time your Cardinal Rank goes up or you could be in trouble the next time you join a quest. The good news is a higher Cardinal Rank also means monsters will drop better items.
Your partners will also increase their abilities based on your Cardinal Rank. Cardinal Rank can be increased by completing parts of the Main Quest or discovering new towns.
Enemies
When you encounter monsters in dungeons or in the open field, you'll have a suite of abilities based on your weapon.
The core concept of every weapon revolves around light attacks, heavy attacks, special attacks, parries, and evasion. All of these actions consume Stamina, or SP. You'll need to manage your SP and stamina carefully to avoid running out mid-combat.
Enemies have many different types of attacks, and some are stronger than others. Each time you encounter a new foe, take a moment to learn their reach and abilities.

Monsters will regularly respawn in greater and greater numbers if they are not defeated, which can make running away from monsters a temporary solution at best. Do your best to dispatch enemies efficiently to avoid becoming overwhelmed.
You'll also encounter massive Boss enemies, usually gated behind a barrier. Once a boss fight begins, it doesn't end until one of you is dead, so make sure you have plenty of restoratives and the right partner to support your style.
Find Your Way
Each time you start a new quest or dungeon, you'll need to explore to reveal the map. When you discover checkpoints, the full surrounding area will be marked with points of interest like hidden treasures or special sealed shortcuts that can be unlocked by fighting bosses at Arks.

You Don't Have to Fight Alone
When you're facing down death, it's dangerous to go alone. Whenever you take on a quest, one or more partner characters will join you.
Each partner has their own fighting style and skills. Get to know them so you can harmonize in battle and live to fight on together!

Combination Skills and Support
Combination Skills are impressive attacks that you and your partner execute together when you've dealt enough damage to enemies.
Most partners have one or two different Combination Skills that you can assign to your action wheel. Use these powerful moves at key moments in tough fights to turn the tide.
Partners can also use their Support Skills when you ask them for help using your action wheel. These skills can be healing, defensive buffs, offensive buffs, and more! You'll be able to preview your partner's skills when preparing to start your quest.
Tactical Options
You can also tell your partner how you want to work together in a fight. Use Switch Mode for your partner to draw focus you can have some breathing room for a timed attack or Free Mode to focus a single enemy down together or efficiently clear out a large number of enemies one-by-one.

Switch Mode allows your partner to draw enemy focus.

Free Mode lets you focus down enemies together.
Items for Support and Survival
As you travel through Aincrad, you'll find many different types of items, like crafting materials that can be harvested in the open field or special drops from defeating enemies.

You'll find a merchant in the Town of Beginning who can sell you some items for Col, the basic currency of Aincrad, and help you craft others. Crafting items like healing potions are a given, but you can also craft items like mines that can deal damage to enemies or interact with the environment to reveal hidden paths or shortcuts.
