Accessing an Ark triggers a boss. Defeating the boss allows you to remove the Sealing Barrier connected to it and move onwards.
Gimmicks blocking the path including rocks that can be destroyed with explosive items, vines that can be removed with burning items, and valleys that can be crossed with dodging boost items.
Finding clues for side quests unlocks side quests held by NPCs in town. The locations of the clues are indicated on the map with specific icons.
There are Survey Flags in towns and on the field. You can investigate and register them on the database which gives you more insight into the world of Aincrad. There is a reward for collecting the world data.
When seals are broken, magical bridges will be available, allowing you to use them as shortcuts for explorations.
