Bandai Namco at EVO 2019: Hype Levels Over 9000?!

August 20, 2019

The Evolution Championship Series took place this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bandai Namco’s presence was definitely felt as the greatest fighting game players of the world clashed in games like TEKKEN 7, DRAGON BALL FighterZ and SOULCALIBUR VI. We’ve summed up a quick recap of the finals for you. Witness the intensity surrounding these matches and announcements!

TEKKEN 7

The top TEKKEN 7 players in the world gathered at this Master+ tiered event in the
TEKKEN WORLD TOUR. The air was electric and the hype was tangible as top players in the TEKKEN 7 scene competed to see who would take the stage. Previously the champion of the last two major tournaments in the tour, South Korean competitor Knee was basked in the spotlight. He even brought his now iconic Thanos-like snap like he did at CEO 2019.

Though this time, he had Arslan Ash to beat during the finals. Arslan is a 23 year old competitor that traveled all the way from Pakistan via an incentive program. Already the TEKKEN 7 champion at EVO Japan, Arslan Ash was the one to beat at EVO 2019.

It was a wise decision for Arslan to be scouted to both tournaments. This time around, he didn’t lose a single match! Though Knee couldn't win his third TEKKEN WORLD TOUR Master trophy in a row, he left EVO 2019 with second place. Knee is also still a major candidate for the Tour’s Finals trophy at Bangkok in December.

The energy doesn’t end there! Harada-san took the stage to announce the highly awaited Season 3 of TEKKEN 7. Two characters will join the already stellar roster: Zafina and Leroy Smith. While the Zafina is a returning character from TEKKEN 6, Leeroy is a brand new fighter who is a martial arts expert - not even Lei or Law can handle him! This season’s content will also bring improvements like update patches and new game modes. Stay tuned for more details!

DRAGON BALL FighterZ

An emotional rematch between the two finalists of last year’s EVO exploded onto the stage. The former champion SonicFox was pitted against GO1, EVO 2018’s runner up. Both players progressed to the finals with no losses. Their 30 minute match was simply godlike.

Using technical combos and skillful maneuvers, it was like watching the anime come to life. This became even more apparent when Japanese competitor GO1 finally defeated his American rival on the EVO stage. The newest DRAGON BALL FighterZ World Tour champion couldn’t hold back tears in this emotional clash, an event that will forever be carved in our most fondest memories of the event.

Yet again, the hype doesn’t end there. DRAGON BALL FighterZ is receiving a brand new character. Announced at EVO, Janemba (the main villain of the DRAGON BALL: Fusion Reborn movie) is now out as a DLC character. Additionally, there’s even a glimpse of a very important character coming to the game. Take a look at the trailer below and see for yourself!

SOULCALIBUR VI

The Stage of History had one of the most nerve wrecking endings at EVO 2019. In the semifinals, Japanese competitor Yuttoto went up against the French player Skyll. Just take a look at the clip below!

This incredible finish guaranteed Yuttoto a spot in the finals against American player Bluegod. After an amazing performance using Voldo, Yuttoto took the EVO 2019 trophy home.

You guessed it, the excitement isn’t over! SOULCALIBUR VI will have a season 2! This new content will add new characters. The first of which will be the swordmaster Haohmaru, who is coming to the Stage of History all the way from Samurai Shodown!

Furthermore, series veteran Cassandra is now out, along with with her arsenal of weapons and even a new story mission!
